Managing Ingrown Toenails At Home

Apr 15, 2020

Recently I've received some calls from a number of you asking what you can do to treat your ingrown toenails at home until we reopen the clinic. The lock down due to Covid-19 is in place until the 5th of May and might be extended past that date but painful ingrown toenails don't like waiting.

Here is a few tips that will ease the pain and discomfort:

1. Bathe the affected foot in warm salty water or Epsom salts for 5 min. Dry well afterwards, especially between the toes.

2. Apply zinc oxide tape to take some pressure off the affected side as per video below:

Zinc oxide tape and adherent spray may be purchased on amazon, however you can try your local pharmacy first. If you struggle finding the skin adherent, you may try using some skin disinfectant - anything with a high content of alcohol. However, avoid disinfecting creams, they are too oily. This will ensure the tape will stick on well. Once the tape is in place, do not apply the band aid straight away.

3. Place a small bit of rolled cotton wool in the corner between the skin and the nail as per pictures below (image 1 -3). You can use a wooden toothpick to guide the cotton wool into place.

4. If the toe is very red, swollen, painful and oozing fluid it may mean that it is infected. In this case, once cotton wool is in place, apply 2-3 drops of iodine tincture on top of the cotton wool. (image 4).

5. Cover with a band aid. If the toe is infected, cover first with inadine dressing (which can be purchased over the counter in most pharmacies). Then apply the band aid. Inadine dressing in brown in colour and is covered by two white sheets. Make sure to remove those prior to applying it to the skin ;)

6. Keep the dressing dry for 2-3 days. Remove. Repeat from step 1

If you think that your toe is infected, please call us on 0838241454 as you may require an antibiotic. We do FREE video consultations during which we can advise you the best way to treat your ingrown nail.
