Fungal nails can be an unsightly and persistent problem that affects many individuals. When toenails become infected with fungus, they often become discolored, thickened, and brittle, causing embarrassment and discomfort. Fortunately, podiatrists offer a range of treatments to combat this condition, and one particularly effective method is the Lacuna Method Treatment. In this blog post, we will explore fungal nails from a podiatrist's perspective and delve into the wonders of the Lacuna Method, explaining how it can help you regain healthy and beautiful nails without getting too technical.
Fungal nails, medically known as onychomycosis, occur when microscopic fungi invade the nail bed. These fungi thrive in warm and moist environments, making our feet an ideal breeding ground. Walking barefoot in public areas like swimming pools, gyms, and locker rooms increases the risk of infection. Additionally, wearing tight-fitting shoes or socks that don't allow proper ventilation can also contribute to the problem.
Fungal nails manifest themselves in various ways. Initially, you may notice white or yellow discoloration under the nail, which may gradually spread and cause the nail to thicken and become brittle. As the infection progresses, the nail may become distorted, develop a foul odor, or even detach from the nail bed. Fungal nails can be stubborn, and traditional treatments like topical creams or oral medications may not always provide satisfactory results.
The lacuna method is a treatment for fungal nails which involves drilling multiple micro holes through the nail plate, this allows an anti fungal solution such as lamisil AT 1% spray to be transported to the area of infection (the nail bed) directly. Your practitioner will advise you on the frequency and duration of the application of the spray. Pressure applied to the nail when walking will aid in spreading the medicament under the nail.
As the nail is ‘dead’ the holes will remain and will grow out naturally. Review appointments are recommended on average every 8 weeks; however, this may vary, and your practitioner will advise you.
This is a relatively new treatment and although short-term studies have been very encouraging, no treatment can be guaranteed to be 100% successful.
The podiatrist will often take pictures of the nails to track progress. You should notice the fungal infection slowly grow out of the nail.
Lacuna Method For Fungal Nails is:
Pain free, safe treatment
Making micro-holes in the nail plate allow an anti-fungal medicine to reach the point of infection directly under the nail
Continued once a day application of an anti fungal allows the nails to grow out healthy.
