4 Top Tips to Protect Your Feet From The Cold & Avoid Chilblains

At this time of the year its getting colder and colder. We all have to out on those extra layers and I don’t know about you but I wish I was in the Caribbean soaking up the heat.

It's important when it gets cold to look after those toes as you can’t get further from your heart and the blood cools quicker in your feet. So here are some simple tips to help protect those feet in the cold and avoid chilblains.

1.Socks/Layers

The first most obvious tip is to layer the feet enough to keep the heat in. Thermal socks are sold in most pharmacies and are an excellent way to prevent chilblains and melt the iciest of feet! So do your feet a favor and put the right kind of socks on the top of your Santa list this winter.

2.Dry Footwear

With the usual extremes already seen this winter, it is very important to prevent the feet from over hydrating as to do so will increase the risk of foot fissures/cracks. Especially between the toes is a common painful area seen in clinic around this time, from too much moisture in our footwear leaving our feet ‘macerated’ (white/soggy – open to blistering/infection). So time to take out those insoles, air them out or use a hairdryer and hey presto! No more walking icebergs…

 3.Avoid Extremes

Chilblains occur when extreme cold or heat affect the small blood vessels in our extremities (fingers/toes). Too much cold narrows the blood vessels in our toes causing stinging pain. Too much heat places strain on our small blood vessels leading to a burning sensation. Avoid placing the feet too close to radiators/hot water bottles and keep those slippers on when indoors. Protective thermal layering in good winter footwear is also a great way of insulating your feet.

 4.Use Creams

Applying a cream to cracked/dry areas to your feet can help reduce painful fissures. Creams that contact mint oils can also aid in promoting more heat needed for cold feet/feet that suffer from chilblains.
