Sick of dealing with those stubborn ingrown toenails? Our patients frequently inquire about permanent treatment options, and we're here to spill all the details:
Nail surgery is the removal of all or part of the toenail. This is done when a patient is suffering with ongoing pain / discomfort or infections.
Our podiatrists would often recommend the surgery when conservative treatment has been tried and failed or when conservative treatment would be considered inappropriate.
The treatment involves an injection of local anaesthetic into each side of the base of your toe so it is numb and pain free during the procedure. Affected side of the nail is then removed. This is followed by application of a chemical at the base of the nail to prevent nail regrowth.
You may eat and drink as normal before the procedure tapes place. Taking the medication that you would normally take each day is advised unless instructed by your doctor or podiatrist. Bring any medication that you think you may need on the day of your procedure. Example an inhaler for asthma.
The treatment may take 1 hour. It is advised you wear open toe shoes or sandals following the procedure until normal sensation returns to the toe. You will be asked to wait 30min in the reception following the procedure.
You cannot drive after the procedure until a normal sensation returns to the toe. It is advised you schedule an alternative transportation.
Once the anaesthetic wears off the affected toe it may be uncomfortable and the toe may bleed for a short period of time when you get home. Paracetamol is advised to take if discomfort is present.
